Generalitat Valenciana
The collaborations between Generalitat Valenciana and the Emilia-Romagna Region
General profile of the Generalitat Valenciana
Country: | Spain |
Region: | Generalitat Valenciana |
President: | Ximo Puig I Ferrer |
Capital: | Valencia |
The Generalitat Valenciana is an autonomous community whose economy is based on typically Mediterranean agricultural production, such as fruit and vegetables near Valencia (vegetables, grapes, tobacco, flowers, citrus fruits, olives). The main industrial sectors are agri-food, but also mechanical engineering, textiles and shipbuilding.
The tertiary sector is particularly well developed thanks to the region’s numerous and valued tourist resources. Tourism is central to the region’s economy, especially seaside tourism. The production sector is based on small and medium-sized enterprises that manufacture, among other things, textiles, furniture and shoes.
The Memorandum of Understanding between the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Generalitat Valenciana was signed in 1992 and is still in force. Following President Puig’s recent visit to Emilia-Romagna (28 September 2022), the two Regions decided to update and renew it.
The Shaping Fair Cities project
Funded in the framework of the EU Development Education and Awareness Raising (DEAR) Programme, the project aimed to raise awareness and actively involve local decision-makers, civil servants, grassroots organisations and citizens in the implementation of the SDGs in 8 European countries and 2 EU partner countries.
Other collaborations
For about 20 years, ART-ER has been collaborating with the development agency of the Generalitat Valenciana IVACE (formerly IMPIVA) on projects related to innovation, sustainability and international cooperation, with a focus on Latin America. ART-ER and the Generalitat Valenciana have recently completed the implementation of a DG GROWTH project about innovation and the social economy in the framework of the Social Economy Missions.

A collaboration is underway in the ceramic industry, a highly energy-intensive production sector. Its aims are to ensure an energy transition based on innovation and to find viable technological alternatives in the shortest possible time.
The collaboration also included a proposal put forward jointly by the Generalitat Valenciana and the Emilia-Romagna Region for the revision of some mechanisms of the European Union Emissions Trading System (European Union Emissions Trading System - EU ETS). The ETS is the main instrument adopted by the European Union to reach CO2 reduction targets in the main industrial sectors and in the aviation sector. The system was introduced and regulated in European legislation by Directive 2003/87/EC (ETS Directive).
