In the last three decades, the Chinese province of Guangdong has achieved a rapid and deep urbanization and industrialization, transforming a backward agricultural reality into a more modern and dynamic industrial and commercial economy. As in the Pearl River Delta, an area of Guangdong known as the "Factory of the World", due to the extraordinary concentration of manufacturing industries.
The Pearl River Delta (PRD) area, the economic heart of the province, consists of a cluster of nine prefectures--the capital Guangzhou (Guangzhou), Shenzhen, Foshan, Dongguan, Zhuhai, Zhongshan, Huizhou, Jiangmen and Zhaoqing--concentrating most of Guangdong's industrial, commercial and service settlements.
In the secondary sector, the IT&C electronics and electronic equipment industry ranks first in Guangdong in terms of size, while household appliance production is the country's largest, especially in terms of volume exported abroad. Other key sectors include petrochemicals, textile apparel, construction materials, pharmaceuticals and traditional medicine, and automotive, components and motor vehicles.
In the service sector, wholesale and retail trade is the most important sector, followed by real estate and financial intermediation.
- A Memorandum of Understanding was signed on economic, cultural and educational issues was signed on May 11, 2015.
- Deputy Governor Qin Weizhong with the Guangdong delegation was a guest at the "Regions for global development" Summit on June 12-14, 2019.
- Signing of the joint declaration with partner regions California, Pennsylvania, Gauteng, Land Hessen, Nouvelle Aquitaine and Emilia-Romagna Region.
- In 2020, at the beginning of the Covid pandemic, Guangdong supported Emilia-Romagna by sending a large amount of surgical masks.
